Beware of Erroneous IRS Tax Notices

August 14, 2020

Following this year’s July 15th deadline, you may have received an erroneous notice from the IRS regarding a balance due, tax penalties or interest related to a payment you made by check.

Pandemic-related reduced staff at the IRS has been problematic, resulting in long delays in posting taxpayer payments by check. In addition, despite the implementation of expedited procedures, refunds aren’t getting processed as quickly as we would like.

If you receive a notice for a payment that you made by July 15th, any assessment will be removed once the payment has been processed. Since payments are still being processed, we recommend that you do not yet cancel a check that you sent in prior to the deadline.
